The Kaumatua Games is an annual event that brings together seniors 55 years and over from across Hamilton and the Waikato. It is run by the Rauawaawa Trust.
A group of Kaumātua established the Rauawaawa Kaumātua Charitable Trust in 1997 and they identified a need for culturally focused, appropriate and accessible health, social and community-based activities and services. The overarching aim being to enhance the quality of life and well-being of Kaumātua.
Essentially the Kaumātua Games is a sports day, to promote the social and physical well-being of seniors, and includes non-Maori. Over 400 people participate each year.
I enjoy a close relationship with Rauawaawa Trust, supporting their work and events. I have attended the last 3 Kaumātua Games and had the honor of giving out the award for 3rd place this year. They are currently fundraising to improve their site where every week 100’s of Kaumātua receive support.
Thanks to Koro Rangi Manihera and CE Rangimahora Reddy and the team for all the great work they do in our community.
